5 Essential Open Chords Every Beginner Should Know

Guitar Lessons in Nunawading

Once you’ve got the basics of tab reading down, learning a handful of essential open chords for beginners is the next big step toward playing real songs. These five chords alone unlock hundreds of popular songs, and they form the foundation almost every guitarist builds on.

What Is an Open Chord?

An open chord uses at least one unfretted (open) string, played alongside fretted notes. They’re called “open” because they ring out freely, and they’re generally the easiest chord shapes for beginners to learn first.

The 5 Chords to Start With

G Major – a great starting point, often the first full chord shape beginners learn

C Major – pairs naturally with G in countless songs

D Major – a compact shape using only the top four strings

E Minor – one of the simplest shapes of all, just two fingers

A Minor – closely related to C, easy to switch between the two

Practicing Chord Changes

The real challenge isn’t learning each shape individually but how well can you switch between chords smoothly while staying in time with a metronome. Practice moving from one chord to the next slowly with your metronome set at 50bpm. Before attempting to speed up the tempo be sure your finger placements for each chord is accurate. When starting out, clean accurate chord transitions matter more than speed.

Practice Tips

Spend a few minutes each day just switching between two chords at a time (e.g. G to C, then C to D) rather than trying to learn all five at once. If you’re a current student, ask your teacher to check your finger positioning in your next guitar lesson.
